Mistletoe is for Kissing
Santa gets sexy
As the holiday season is upon us and Chrismas romance movies abound, I’ve been thinking quite a bit about love scenes. What makes them sizzle? And what makes us swoon?
For me, the best kind of love scene blends scorching chemistry with authentic emotion and always includes consent. That’s a cocktail sure to conjure climax.
As with all writing, conflict is key, even in a love scene. But that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t always be agreements made between partners. There needs to be push and pull, there needs to be desire and devotion, there needs to be friction if we ever want to generate a spark. But more than just carnality, there needs to be caring and courage.
More importantly than ever in our modern culture, a balance of power is required in the bedroom. This doesn’t mean things can’t get dirty, or edgy, or (cue the theme music from Fifty Shades of Grey) rough, but it does mean all activities must be sanctioned by all partners. The sexiest scenes ever written involve mutual respect, balance of power, and equal desire.
Slap me, spank me, tie me up with a Christmas ribbon, but make sure you have my permission first.
Sometimes its a lot more fun being on Santa’s naughty list, but it’s never nice (or legal) to force your will on someone else. So while it might be cold outside, it’s always cozy and consensual in my characters’ bed chambers.
Write on, my friends, and feel free to add some spice to your Christmas cocktails.
